Project Discovery

Got an idea but not sure where to start, if its feasible, or whats next? We can help you figure out the what, why and how of your project.

Project discovery workshops

Frequently, we have clients come to us with the seed of a great idea but no idea how to get started. They're intimidated by technology choices and wonder if their project is even possible. In these situations, we use our tried-and-tested discovery workshop to tease out the details of the idea, refine it, and come up with a plan to move things forward.

Our project discovery workshops offer a multitude of benefits. They provide us with an opportunity to understand our clients, their needs, and their challenges, enabling us to develop the perfect solution. We take their ideas and transform them into reality. The structured discovery workshop covers the following sections, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the project.

Discovery workshop - Overview

Why?

This is to find out exactly why we are starting this project. We want to find out the client's main goals, frustrations, and motivations behind the project. This allows us to get into the real nitty gritty of the project. Below is an example of one of our clients' (HiPeKids) discovery workshops.

Discovery workshop - Why?

Who?

Here, we find out who the users of your app, website or product will be and what their main objectives are. By understanding the user's perspective, we can create a user-centred design that prioritises usability and addresses the specific needs of each user type.

Discovery workshop - Who?

What?

In this section, we encourage our clients to actively participate and think about the specifics of each user type. We collaboratively write user stories, which are invaluable during the discovery phase. They help us capture the specific needs and understand the features for each user type. By shifting the focus from technical requirements to user needs and goals, we ensure a user-centric approach.

User stories are written in plain, easily understandable language. They are brief and straightforward to understand. This cuts back any waffle and keeps the focus clear so we are all aligned and know what must happen.

User stories also help prioritise. When thinking about them, we discuss how important each feature is for the project's MVP and what is nice to have.

User stories

How?

After going over the user stories, there's often a lot to discuss. We begin to get more technical and understand the hows of building certain features. It's also an excellent time to speak to the client and let them know what are quick wins or what might be larger features, which also helps with prioritisation. We also review any third-party solutions that might help the project(s). Here is when we flesh things out a bit more, we begin to solidify a technical plan. We can go away and think about the architecture of the project.

Design

This is a fun part of the discovery. We show clients many different variations and styles of websites and apps in a similar sector. They tell us whether they love or hate each style, which gives us some real hints and pointers about what they like and don't like.

Wrapping it all up

At the end of the discovery workshop, we compile all the insights and ideas into a formal design spec. This document serves as a blueprint for the project, which we (or any other chosen party) can use to accurately quote the project and proceed with the design and development phase.
